Get your free estimateLinear Access Control Installation: The Orange County Owner’s Guide
We install, replace, and wire Linear access control systems throughout Orange County, and most complete access control installations run between $850 and $2,400 depending on what you already have in the ground. That price includes the controller, the keypad or card reader, the power supply, labor, and programming before we leave the property. The most common way Orange County homeowners find us is a keypad that works on Tuesday and goes dead on Wednesday, or a gate that opens fine from the remote but will not respond to the keypad anymore. Sometimes the controller still clicks but the gate does not move. Either way, we can usually match the existing Linear model and get it working the same day we arrive, because we carry Linear-compatible controllers, keypads, and power supplies on our trucks.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear built access control around a few workhorse controller lines, and most of what we install falls into three camps. The APeX series, which includes the AP-5 and the older AP-3, is the controller we see the most on residential gates across Orange County. The AE series is the newer replacement, with the AE-500 and AE-1000 as the common models. And on older properties, the RE-1 and RE-2 receivers and the AM-KP keypads still turn up regularly. The compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Linear keypads and controllers are not always backward compatible between the APeX and AE lines, so if your controller is an AP-5 and the keypad you bought online is an AE series, they may not talk to each other. We match by the sticker on the board, not by what the housing looks like. As for OEM versus aftermarket, we are glad to install either. A genuine Linear part carries the factory warranty and exact programming steps we already know. A quality aftermarket equivalent from a known manufacturer often costs 30 to 40 percent less and works just as well in the Orange County climate, where heat and coastal moisture are the real enemies of the board in the housing.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing
- The keypad lights up but the gate does not move. Nine times out of ten this is a failed relay on the controller board. The keypad is still sending the signal; the controller is not actually closing the circuit that tells the operator to run.
- Water inside the keypad or controller housing. We see this most often in ocean-adjacent cities like Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, and Laguna Niguel, where morning fog condenses inside an unsealed housing and eventually corrodes the board terminals.
- The gate opens on its own at random times. This is usually a short in the keypad wiring or a failing relay that is arcing. It is also a real security problem, because the gate is doing the opposite of what it is supposed to do.
- The access control worked for years and now only works when you tap the keypad hard. The tactile switches on Linear keypads wear out. The button membrane is a consumable part, and on a 10-year-old keypad in full sun it is often the first thing to go.
- You hear a click but no movement from the operator. The controller is alive. The problem is downstream. Could be the operator, could be the wiring, but swapping the board will not fix it, which is why we test the full circuit before quoting.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Orange County, a straightforward Linear keypad replacement with programming runs $180 to $340 in most cases. A full access control retrofit, meaning a new controller, new keypad, possibly a new power supply, and rewiring, runs $850 to $1,400 for a typical residential gate. If a card reader gets added, you are in the $1,600 to $2,400 range depending on whether we are running new conduit or reusing existing wiring. The wildcard is always the wire run: a keypad mounted on a post 80 feet from the operator needs wire, and wire means trenching or surface conduit. We itemize the parts and labor on one written page before any work starts, and the quote we write is the quote you pay. Every access control installation leaves with the Kingswell Guarantee, written on the invoice: if it fails inside the 365-day period, we come back and make it right at no charge. That includes parts and the return visit.
DIY or Call Us?
Access control is low-voltage, so it is not the kind of danger you get from high-tension gate springs or a 240-volt operator circuit. You are not going to hurt yourself with a 24-volt keypad. But here is what goes wrong when owners try it on a Sunday afternoon: the new keypad is wired to the wrong terminals on the controller, the controller is fine for 20 minutes, and then the board fries and now you are buying a $400 controller instead of paying for one service call. If you want to check anything, check the obvious: is the breaker on, is the keypad dry inside, is there a spider nest in the housing. Past that, call us at (820) 529-0801. We will tell you over the phone whether it sounds like the keypad, the controller, or the operator, and we will show up with the right part on the truck.
FAQs
Inland, a quality Linear controller and keypad typically last 10 to 15 years. Along the coast, figure 7 to 10 years because salt air and fog attack the board terminals faster. The keypad is always the first casualty in direct sun.
Some failures are repairable, especially a stuck relay or a corroded terminal strip, but most residential controller failures are board-level and a board replacement is cheaper than a bench repair. We will tell you which one you have once we open the housing, before you spend a dollar.
A keypad swap is usually done in under an hour. A full controller and keypad retrofit takes two to four hours. A job with new wire runs and a card reader can take half a day. We give you the window before we start and we hit it.
Yes. We carry Linear APeX and AE series controllers, keypads, power supplies, and common mounting hardware on our service trucks, plus compatible parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems. If it is a specialized card reader or a commercial controller, we order it and schedule the install when it arrives.
