Ghost Controls keypad and intercom repair in Orange County typically runs $165 – $385 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad head, the intercom module, or both, and most jobs are completed in a single visit. The usual call starts the same way: a keypad that was flawless for three years suddenly ignores the first button press, or an intercom that crackles like a drive-thru speaker after rain. Ghost Controls builds these as sealed outdoor units, so when the membrane or the board inside goes, you’re almost always replacing the component rather than nursing it along.
We stock Ghost Controls-compatible keypads and intercom kits on our trucks, along with the wiring harnesses and power supplies those units need. If your gate opener is a Ghost Controls AXP, AEX, RAY, or SYL series, we can usually have the new part matched and installed the same day we arrive. You don’t have to figure out which board revision you have before you call; that’s our job when we open the housing.
Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
Ghost Controls has sold several keypad and intercom configurations over the years, and they don’t all swap cleanly. The current AXDP keypad, AXIP intercom, and AXXP combo units pair with the AXP and AEX series openers. Older SYL and RAY systems from the mid-2010s used a different connector and a different mounting plate, which means a new Ghost Controls keypad head won’t always bolt onto an old base without a short adapter harness. We carry both the old and new connector styles so nobody sits around waiting on a second visit.
One thing worth checking before you order anything yourself: Ghost Controls stamps a model number on the back of the keypad housing and on the board inside. On the AXXP combo unit, the board revision number is printed in tiny white text near the ribbon cable socket, and revisions below C4 do not support the newer Wi-Fi intercom card if you decide to add it later. That’s the kind of small gotcha that turns a thirty-minute swap into a two-week backorder when it’s missed.
We install both genuine Ghost Controls parts and quality aftermarket equivalents that match the connector pinouts and weather-sealing specs. The honest difference usually comes down to membrane durability and button travel. Some aftermarket keypads feel mushier by year two, especially in full sun exposure. If your keypad sits on a west-facing pillar off Bake Parkway or up in Yorba Linda, the genuine Ghost Controls membrane holds up noticeably better in our experience.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Keypad ignores the first press or requires hard repeated jabs. The silicone membrane under the buttons has worn through or the dome switches have oxidized. Coastal air near Newport and Huntington Beach accelerates this, and once it starts, it does not get better on its own.
- The keypad works but only when the panel is cool. This is the board showing heat fatigue. Inland Orange County summers push surface temps on an unshaded operator box past 140°F, and failing capacitors start acting up exactly then.
- Intercom audio cracks, hums, or cuts out mid-sentence. There’s moisture in the speaker housing or the microphone seal ring has dried out and let condensation through. We see this most often on gates within a mile or two of the coast.
- You hear a relay click but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad is sending signal, but the output relay on the keypad board is pitted. The keypad thinks it’s working. The operator thinks it never got the command.
- The keypad backlight flickers or stays dim. The LED driver is failing or the unit is being under-powered by a corroded wire splice at the base of the post. We find the splice corroded more often than the board, which is a cheaper fix than it looks.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A Ghost Controls keypad replacement in Orange County runs $165 – $245 parts and labor for most AXDP units. A keypad and intercom combo (AXXP) lands between $285 and $385 installed, depending on whether we’re also re-running the low-voltage wire or replacing a corroded splice at the gate post. If the intercom module alone is the problem, that’s usually a $195 – $265 job.
Every one of those numbers is the kind of written price we put in your hand before any work starts. That’s not a courtesy; it’s the Kingswell Guarantee, and it’s stamped on the invoice along with a 365-day written warranty on the repair. If the replacement keypad fails inside that year, the return visit is free under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. No deductibles, no argument.
The price you’re quoted is the price you pay, and it includes the new component, the wiring check, the programming and code setup, and testing the gate through ten full cycles before we leave. We don’t come back with a mystery line item for “post-install calibration” or “weather sealing adjustment.” If it was needed, it was already in the written quote.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself before you call. Confirm the keypad’s backlight lights up at all, look for cracks in the enclosure, and make sure the low-voltage wire at the bottom of the post hasn’t been chewed or weed-whacked. Those findings help us prepare the right parts before we roll the truck.
What we’d steer you away from is opening the housing on a hardwired keypad while the operator has line voltage nearby, because the low-voltage side and the AC lines often share the same box. Ghost Controls keypads are designed to be serviceable by a trained technician, and the board inside is easy to damage if the ribbon cable is pulled at an angle. A hundred-and-fifty-dollar keypad became a three-hundred-dollar keypad-and-board replacement more than once this year over that exact mistake. If you’re unsure, call (820) 529-0801 and talk it through with us for free.
FAQs
A Ghost Controls keypad in Orange County typically lasts five to eight years, though unshaded west-facing installations inland often fail around year five due to membrane and board heat stress. Coastal installations tend to fail from moisture intrusion at about the same age, so the realistic lifespan across most of the county is five to eight years. If yours is in that window and acting up, call (820) 529-0801 and we’ll give you a straight answer on whether it’s repairable or ready for replacement.
Sometimes. A corroded wire splice, a blown inline fuse, or a loose ribbon cable can be repaired for under $100. If the membrane itself is worn through or the board has oxidized traces, replacement is the only durable fix. One of our technicians can tell you which situation you have within ten minutes of opening the panel.
A standard Ghost Controls keypad or intercom replacement takes 45 to 90 minutes once we’re on site. Programming the new unit to your existing operator and testing the gate cycles is included in that time. You don’t lose a full day to the repair.
We stock Ghost Controls-compatible keypads, intercom modules, wiring harnesses, and power supplies on our trucks serving Orange County. We also keep adapter harnesses for the older SYL and RAY series connectors so a same-day repair doesn’t stall on a part that has to come from a distributor. You can call (820) 529-0801 and confirm before you book.
We’ve been doing this work across Orange County since 2008, and the Ghost Controls systems out here have a personality we know well. Dean Prescott and our technicians have replaced enough of them from Anaheim Hills to San Clemente to tell you what your keypad’s problem is over the phone most of the time, and then show up with the right part in the truck. Write the price down before the work starts, that is the whole plan. Call (820) 529-0801 for a free estimate, and we’ll have a live person answer, day or night.
