Get your free estimateDoorKing Access Control Installation: The Orange County Owner’s Guide
We install and replace DoorKing access control parts across Orange County every week, and most jobs run between $285 and $650 installed, depending on the component and your model. If your keypad has gone dead, your card reader stopped recognizing remotes, or the gate opens on its own after a power blink, you’ll usually know the exact part that failed by the way the system behaves. Same-week scheduling is standard for us, and we carry the most common DoorKing parts on the truck so we don’t have to make you wait on a second appointment.
The typical Orange County homeowner discovers an access control failure the hard way: they punch in the code three times, hear nothing, and end up wedging the gate open with a trash can before heading to work. We’ve been fixing that exact scene since 2008. DoorKing access control systems are built to last, but the peripheral parts – keypads, readers, receiver boards, power supplies – fail in predictable ways. The good news is these parts are usually a straight swap, not a whole-system replacement.
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
DoorKing builds its access control components to work across most of its operator lines, but there are compatibility gotchas you should know about before ordering a part yourself. The 1812 Classic keypad, 1838 telephone entry system, and 1601/1602/1603 operators are what we see most often in Orange County residential settings, while the 6050/6100/6500 series slide operators dominate commercial gates along the Irvine Spectrum corridor and Anaheim Hills. Not every keypad works with every control board, and DoorKing’s older 1500-series boards won’t talk to the newer surface-mount readers without an adapter.
Here’s the identification trick: open the operator cover, find the control board, and look for the model number printed in white block letters along the top edge. That number, not the keypad housing, determines which access control replacement parts will work. We stock OEM DoorKing parts because aftermarket equivalents for DoorKing boards have a spotty record here – the coastal salt air from Huntington Beach to San Clemente corrodes aftermarket board connectors faster than the sealed OEM ones. One checkable specific: DoorKing’s own power supplies use a slow-blow fuse spec of 3A on most residential models, and we’ve seen generic replacements rated at 5A that let the board burn out instead of the fuse. That $30 aftermarket part can turn into a $400 board replacement.

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. You hear the relay click, but nothing happens. That click means the keypad is working and the signal isn’t reaching the operator. The failure is usually in the wiring run or the control board relay itself.
- Keypad buttons work randomly, or you have to press 5 twice before it registers. The membrane keypad on older DoorKing 1812 units wears unevenly – the 5 and 8 keys go first because they’re on the natural thumb line. Once the membrane starts delaminating from sun and heat (and Orange County gives both in spades), the whole keypad needs replacing.
- Card reader or transmitter works in the morning, not in the afternoon. That’s a heat expansion issue in the reader wiring connector, not a bad remote. We see this pattern constantly in Fullerton and Yorba Linda during July and August when surface temps on a black gate operator box hit 160 degrees.
- The gate opens by itself, usually right after a power flicker. Your access control board’s memory got scrambled. DoorKing boards hold open commands in volatile memory, and a dirty brownout from SCE can leave a phantom open signal. Sometimes it’s a $15 capacitor on the power supply; sometimes the board needs replacement.
- Telephone entry system rings once and drops the call. That’s the phone line interface board, and it’s a DoorKing-specific failure we’ve diagnosed dozens of times. The surge from a nearby lightning strike (or even a car hitting a pole) takes out the 1838 phone board before anything else in the system.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
DoorKing access control installation in Orange County runs $285 to $650 for most single-part replacements, parts and labor included. A straight keypad swap on an 1812 typically lands around $285 to $375. A complete 1838 telephone entry system replacement, including reprogramming all tenant codes, runs $450 to $650. A failed control board on a slide operator falls in the $400 to $550 range depending on the series. We write the full price down before we touch a single wire, and that written price includes the part, the labor, and the reprogramming.
Every DoorKing access control repair we do carries the Kingswell Guarantee: the price is in writing before work starts, we show up in the window we gave you, we leave your gate area cleaner than we found it, and the repair carries a written 365-Day Done Right Promise. If that part fails inside a year, you pay nothing for us to come back and fix it. That’s not a verbal promise. It’s printed on the invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do yourself: check that the breaker hasn’t tripped, look for obvious water inside the keypad housing, and confirm the operator has power. That’s the extent of safe self-service on a DoorKing access control system. Beyond that, you’re working with 120V wiring inside the operator cabinet and low-voltage logic lines that are easy to short. A wrong wire placement on a DoorKing control board sends 24V back through a 5V circuit and kills the board. We’ve seen homeowners turn a $300 keypad swap into a $700 full-board job by guessing wrong.
Access control installation is one of those repairs where the part knowledge matters more than the labor. We know which DoorKing boards pair with which keypads, which firmware versions play nice together, and which aftermarket parts cause issues in Orange County coastal air. Call us at (820) 529-0801 and we’ll give you a price over the phone if we can, or schedule a visit and put the price in writing before any work begins. That’s how Dean Prescott has run this company since 2008, and it’s not changing now.
FAQs
A straight keypad or reader swap takes 45 minutes to an hour and a half in most cases. A full telephone entry system replacement with program codes takes two to three hours. You’ll have a working gate the same day we arrive, and the written quote you approve is the final invoice, no surcharges.
Sometimes, but not on keypads. A failed control board relay can be replaced ($85 to $125 vs $400 for the whole board), and bad solder joints on a power supply can be reflowed. But keypad membranes, card readers, and phone boards are sealed units – when they fail, they get replaced. We’ll tell you honestly which one applies to your part before quoting anything. Call (820) 529-0801 for a straight answer on your specific symptom.
We keep common DoorKing replacement parts on the truck: 1812 keypads, receiver boards, power supplies, loop detector modules, and common control board relays. If your part is outside our truck stock, we order OEM direct and typically install it within three to five business days. Most Orange County repair calls are completed on the first visit.
Keypads last 5 to 8 years here before the sun and heat take the membrane. Control boards typically run 10 to 12 years with proper surge protection. Card readers near the coast in Newport or Laguna Beach need replacement every 4 to 6 years because of salt air corrosion on the internal connectors. Every repair we install carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise, so if the part doesn’t meet a reasonable lifespan inside that year, we come back and correct it at no charge.
