DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Orange County Owner’s Guide

DoorKing keypad and intercom repair in Orange County typically runs $145 to $385 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a worn keypad face, a failed intercom board, or the whole entry station. We stock DoorKing-compatible parts on our trucks and can usually complete the repair the same day we diagnose it. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: a delivery driver calls saying the gate won’t answer, or a tenant reports the keypad beeps but the gate just sits there. By the time we arrive, the part has usually been failing quietly for weeks.

Here’s the thing about DoorKing entry systems: they’re built to last, but the keypad and intercom take weather abuse that the operator itself never sees. Orange County sun cooks the keypad membrane until the numbers crack. Coastal salt air in Newport Beach and Laguna Niguel corrodes the intercom speaker terminals. Inland heat in Yorba Linda and Rancho Santa Margarita bakes the circuit board until solder joints fatigue. We’ve been repairing these since 2008, and we can usually tell you what failed before we even open the housing.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

This covers the DoorKing 1812, 1814, 1816, and 1818 entry systems, plus the 1802, 1803, and 1808 telephone entry models and the 1830-series keypads. If you’re not sure which one you have, look for the silver data plate inside the keypad housing or on the back of the intercom board. The model number will start with “18” followed by two or three more digits. Take a photo of that plate before you call us; it tells our technician exactly which parts to pull from the truck.

DoorKing keypads come in a few physical configurations. The flush-mount keypads sit nearly flat against the pedestal, while surface-mount versions stick out about three inches. The older membrane-style keypads from the early 2000s fail differently than the newer die-cast metal button keypads. We stock both OEM DoorKing parts and quality aftermarket equivalents. For keypads, we usually recommend OEM because the aftermarket button spacing and weather sealing don’t always match the pedestal cutout perfectly. For intercom speakers and microphones, the aftermarket equivalents are often identical and cost about 30% less. We’ll tell you the price difference and let you decide; we write it down either way.

Signs Your DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keypad beeps but won’t open the gate. The membrane or individual buttons have worn out. You’re getting a beep because the keypad still has power, but the switching circuit isn’t registering the digits. This is the most common DoorKing keypad failure we see in Orange County, and it usually means a new keypad face rather than a full system swap.
  • Visitor presses the call button and hears nothing. The intercom speaker has failed or the wiring between the intercom and the house station has corroded. Homes closer to the coast see this sooner; salt air eats the speaker terminals faster than you’d think.
  • You can hear visitors, but they can’t hear you. That’s the intercom microphone, not the speaker. On DoorKing units, the mic sits behind a small rubber grommet on the keypad face. When that grommet dries out and cracks, moisture gets in and the mic quits.
  • Keypad works intermittently, especially after rain or heavy dew. Water is getting past the faceplate seal. This is the early warning sign most people ignore. Once moisture reaches the circuit board, the repair cost jumps from a new gasket to a new board.
  • The screen or backlight flickers, or the unit resets itself when a button is pressed. A solder joint on the intercom board is failing, likely from heat cycling. In Orange County’s inland valleys, where summer daytime temps swing 40 degrees from the overnight lows, this is a predictable failure we see on units six years and older.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote in Orange County, and we’ll write the exact number on your estimate before any work starts:

  • Keypad face replacement (membrane or metal button): $145 to $225 installed, parts included.
  • Intercom speaker or microphone replacement: $175 to $260 installed.
  • Intercom circuit board replacement: $285 to $385 installed, depending on the model series and whether we need to reprogram the unit.
  • Full entry station replacement (keypad, intercom, and housing): $425 to $650 installed, programmed to your existing gate operator.

The range exists because a flush-mount 1812 keypad on a residential swing gate is a different job than a surface-mount 1830-series keypad wired into a commercial telephone entry system with multiple tenant codes. The labor is the same hourly rate either way; what changes is the part cost and whether we’re reprogramming directory entries. Every repair comes with our 365-Day Done Right Promise written on the invoice. If the keypad or intercom fails again within that year, we come back and make it right at no charge.

You’re also getting what Dean Prescott built Portcullis on: a written price before the first screw comes out. No technician opening your entry station and “discovering” surprises that double the bill. The price we quote is the price on the invoice. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee, and every Portcullis location is independently owned and operated but held to it the same way across the board.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do a few things before calling us. Check that the keypad is getting power: is the backlight on, or does pressing a button produce any beep at all? If the unit is completely dead, check the breaker that feeds the gate operator. If the breaker is fine and the gate itself still opens with a remote or the inside button, the problem is in the keypad or intercom, not the operator. That’s useful information for us, but it’s also where DIY should stop.

DoorKing entry stations run low voltage, so you’re not going to electrocute yourself. The real risk is worse: you open the housing, see a ribbon cable or a wiring terminal block, move something slightly, and now the gate won’t open at all. Or you order a keypad online that looks right but has the wrong wire order for your model, and the gate opens every time someone presses the call button. That’s a security problem, not a convenience one. A keypad and intercom are the primary way visitors access your property; when they’re wired wrong, you’re handing out access without knowing it. Call us at (820) 529-0801 and we’ll match the part to your exact DoorKing model and have it installed correctly the first time.
