Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Orange County Owner’s Guide

Linear keypad and intercom repair in Orange County typically runs $240 to $680 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a standalone wireless keypad, a hardwired keypad at the gate, or a full intercom module with the power supply. Most keypad-only swaps are same-visit jobs. The usual discovery goes like this: the gate works fine from the remote in the car, but the keypad outside the driveway stopped accepting the code, or the intercom at the house rings but you cannot hear anyone through the speaker. That split, remote-works-but-keypad-doesn’t, tells us the operator itself is likely fine and the failure is in the entry device or its wiring.

We stock Linear-compatible keypads, intercom boards, power supplies, and wiring harnesses on our trucks, and we service them on gates across Orange County, from Anaheim Hills to San Clemente. As an independent service provider, we’re not affiliated with Linear, but we work on their equipment daily and know which part generations play well together and which do not.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear, which is now under the Nortek Control umbrella, made three keypad generations that account for most of what we see in Orange County. The older AK-11 and AK-15 series are hardwired keypads housed in a die-cast metal box, usually mounted on a gooseneck post near the driveway. The mid-generation AP-5 and APeX series went to a smaller, weather-sealed plastic enclosure, and they are prone to sun-faded membrane buttons and corroded terminal strips. The current generation installs are mostly the MegaCode wireless receivers paired with a MCK-2 or MTK-2 style keypad, which uses a rolling code signal instead of a fixed code. That distinction matters because a fixed-code keypad from the AK series cannot be paired to a MegaCode receiver, even though both say Linear on the label. If someone sold you a used keypad and it refuses to learn in, that’s usually why.

When we arrive, we check the model label on the keypad and the receiver board inside the operator. If the label is sun-bleached into oblivion, which happens fast in Orange County, we can still identify the generation by the button layout and the wiring pigtail length. For OEM versus aftermarket: Linear OEM parts are fine, but the aftermarket keypads sold under the Nortek and LiftMaster-compatible labels are often the same board in a cheaper housing. We will install either, but our written guarantee applies to the part and the labor either way.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • The keypad accepts your code but the gate doesn’t move. Nine times out of ten, the keypad is transmitting fine and the issue is the receiver learning was lost, or a relay on the operator board has gone bad. We test the keypad output with a meter before replacing anything.
  • The buttons work intermittently, especially after rain or marine-layer mornings. Linear keypads are weather-rated, but coastal Orange County salt air gets into the membrane. Corroded traces under the keypad face are the usual culprit, and the fix is a new keypad face or the whole unit depending on condition.
  • The intercom rings inside but you cannot hear the person at the gate. That’s typically a failed microphone or a broken wire in the underground run from the gate to the house. We test the line with a tone generator before opening up the panel.
  • The intercom works but the gate release button on the indoor unit does nothing. The audio and the relay are separate circuits. A dead release button often means a failed relay on the intercom master board, which is a board-level repair we do in the truck or on a short bench visit.
  • The keypad backlight is on but the keypress beeps are gone. That’s a tell-tale sign the keypad’s piezo buzzer has failed or the membrane ribbon is starting to delaminate. It will likely keep working for a while, then start dropping digits.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote on Linear keypad and intercom repair across Orange County, parts and labor included:

  • Standalone wireless keypad replacement (MegaCode or fixed-code): $240 to $380 depending on whether we’re also replacing the receiver board
  • Hardwired keypad swap at the gate (AK/AP series): $280 to $420, including new weather-sealed connections and silicone on the enclosure seam
  • Intercom master board repair or replacement: $380 to $680 depending on whether it’s an audio-only fix or a full board swap with the power transformer
  • Underground wire run repair from gate to house: $300 to $550 if we are pulling a new low-voltage line through existing conduit, which is common in older Orange County homes where the original run was direct-buried

What moves the price: whether the existing mounting post survives, whether the wiring is in conduit or direct-buried, and whether the operator itself is old enough that we recommend a matching receiver upgrade at the same visit. You get the price in writing before we turn a single screw, and every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the keypad or intercom repair fails within that year, we come back and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things on a Linear keypad before you call. Make sure the breaker or the low-voltage transformer feeding the gate has not tripped. Look at the keypad’s mounting box for ants or spider webs, which short out keypad terminals more often than you’d think in Orange County yards. And check whether the keypad works from ten feet away but not thirty, which tells us it’s a power or antenna issue, not a board failure.

What you should not do is open the operator cabinet and start swapping keypad wires while the main power is live. A Linear operator has 120-volt line voltage inside, and the keypad terminals sit close enough to the transformer and capacitor leads to make a mistake expensive or worse. If you are not comfortable working around live line voltage, that’s the line to call us at. Dean Prescott and our techs work inside these cabinets every day, and we arrive with the right keypad generation, the right tooling, and the price written down before the work starts. That is the whole plan: write the price down before the work starts. Call (820) 529-0801 for a free estimate.
